How Compress Video works

Compress Video re-encodes your video as an MP4 with the H.264 codec, which plays on every phone, computer and app. The compression level decides how much detail is kept: Balanced gives a much smaller file that looks very close to the original, Smallest goes further, and Best quality keeps more detail.

Lowering the resolution saves the most space: 720p is plenty for WhatsApp and most phones. Smaller videos are never enlarged, and portrait videos are measured on their short side. If the result would be bigger than your original — which happens with videos that are already well compressed — you get the original back unchanged.

Compression runs on your device with FFmpeg in your browser, so even personal videos are never uploaded. It is slower than on a big server: a few seconds of work per second of HD video is normal, so long videos can take a few minutes. Keep the tab open until it finishes.
