About Video to GIF

Turn up to 30 seconds of a video into an animated GIF for chats, slides or websites. Choose the width and smoothness; a colour palette made for your clip keeps the GIF clean and sharp.

How Video to GIF works

Video to GIF turns a part of your video, up to 30 seconds, into an animated GIF. It first builds a colour palette made for your clip and then draws every frame with it, which gives much cleaner colours than a plain conversion — GIFs can only hold 256 colours.

You choose the width (320, 480 or 640 pixels; small videos are never enlarged) and the smoothness (10, 15 or 20 frames per second). GIFs grow quickly with length, size and frame rate, so 3–6 seconds at 480 pixels is the sweet spot for chats and websites.

When to use Video to GIF

  • Make a reaction GIF or meme from a funny moment.
  • Show a short product demo or app feature in an email, slide or README.
  • Share a short clip where videos don't autoplay.
  • Create a looping animation for a website or blog.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my GIF so large?

GIF is an old format with weak compression. Choose a shorter part, a smaller width or 10 fps to make it smaller.

How long can the GIF be?

Up to 30 seconds. Shorter GIFs load faster and are easier to share.

Does the GIF have sound?

No — the GIF format can't hold sound.

Is Video to GIF free?

Yes. Video to GIF on DocEpic is free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how often you use it. The site is supported by ads.

Are my files safe with Video to GIF?

Yes. Video to GIF runs entirely in your web browser, so your files never leave your device and are never uploaded to us.

Do I need to install any software?

No. Video to GIF works in any modern browser on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iPhone.

Is there a file size limit?

Files up to 1024 MB are accepted. Because the work happens on your device, very large files depend on your device's memory.
